“Kathmandu Mayor Calls for Salary Equality: Private Schools Urged to Match Public School Pay”

Educationpatra. KATHMANDU. In a groundbreaking move, Mayor Balen Shah of Kathmandu Metropolis has issued a directive to private schools, urging them to provide the same salary structure as their counterparts in public schools. This comes in response to complaints about discrepancies in teachers’ salaries within the educational sector.

Taking to social media, Mayor Balen emphasized the importance of upholding the rights of teachers in institutional (private) schools. He cited Section 12(7)(g) of the Education Act, 2028, which clearly states that the salaries of teachers in private schools should not be lower than the prescribed scale set by the Government of Nepal.

Furthermore, Rule 68 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City School Education Management Regulations, 2074, emphasizes the protection of teachers’ salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and other benefits, ensuring that any reductions are in line with federal education laws.

In light of these provisions, an official notification has been issued to all institutional schools within Kathmandu Metropolis, instructing them to adhere to the prescribed salary benefits for teachers. Mayor Balen also urged any teachers who do not receive these benefits to promptly contact the Education Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City for immediate assistance.

This progressive step by Mayor Balen aims to create a level playing field for teachers in both public and private schools, promoting fairness and equity within the education system of Kathmandu.
